When switching to a food plan of meat and vegetables, initially it can seem quite bland. The tendency many people have is to add commercial sauces like ketchup, barbeque, sweet chilli, mayo etc. These sauces are unfortunately PACKED with sugar, chemicals and man-made fats (trans-fats, hydrogenated etc) that could prove a major stumbling block in your fat loss/health goals. Experiment by adding sauces like the tomato sauce below my mother created to meat/veg dishes as an alternative that will not only taste better but help you towards your goals as well! Other great healthy additions that add flavour are olive oil, organic butter (yes, I said butter!), spices, herbs etc.  Enter Mrs C!

Mrs C’s Tomato sauce

–           Finely chop 1 large onion and 2 cloves of garlic

–           Fry them together in olive oil until browning a little.

–           Add 2 cartons/cans of chopped organic tomatoes, good dash of Worcester sauce, salt and pepper and a teaspoon of Jalfrezi spice blend, or mild curry powder, or mixed herbs, or any seasoning of your choice.

–           Bring to boil then simmer on very low heat uncovered for as long as you’ve got, stirring occasionally. You could use it straight away but the longer you cook it the less sour it tastes and it thickens up a bit, half an hour is good.

This is great with organic haricot beans as a healthy alternative to Baked Beans but it can take a while to get used to it as it isn’t as sweet, Baked Beans cans are packed full of sugar. This sauce keeps well in the fridge, 2 large spoonfuls of the sauce with half a carton/can of haricot beans makes a good portion for one person.
